I was born in Den Helder on the northern coast of Holland. From an early age I held a fascination for ships and ocean travel, which inspired the career that now takes Me around the globe on the seven seas. I attended the Nautical Academy of Amsterdam in 1987 and graduated as a Maritime Officer in 1991 with both engineering and nautical licenses. While transiting the Florida Straits on a rusty cargo ship during mine apprenticeship, the awe of a passing sleek and majestic cruise ship inspired me to set mine sights on cruising. I joined Holland America Line in 1992 as Fourth Officer on the previous Westerdam. Several promotions later, I was assigned to oversee the construction of Holland America Line’s new Vista Class series of ships, including the Zuiderdam and the Oosterdam, at the Fincantieri shipyards in Italy. In 2005, I received the first command as Master of the Zuiderdam. I have lived in Holland, Singapore, Spain, England and Italy,Australia and other places.

Always smile and make others laugh. Life is a journey but the destinations are not important. Only the person you become and the people you meet. Judge not, be true to yourself and respect all others. Don't sweat the small stuff. Animosity will only eat you alive. This is my creed! I'm very easy going and a very open man. Easy to talk to, about anything. Honest, almost to a fault. A good friend once told me that I am soo darn honest that it's disgusting. haha. sorry that's just me. I grew up in a military family with 5 brothers and sisters. I was the baby ) I've been to 16 different countries and lived in 4 of them and some of the most beautiful earth I have seen in my life is right here in my backyard, in these Sierra's I love living in the foothills. Hiking, mountain biking skiing or just hanging at the river. Especially if there's a music festival going on. Dancing in the sun and swimming in the waters to cool off between sets. Gotta love it. I'm an old school man whose inner boy never grew up. haha. I can be a total goofball at times. Dancin in the kitchen at nite and singing out loud and in the morning, bring you breakfast in bed with a single rose that I stole from the neighbors garden. oops hahaaa. I love thunder storms. Gathering every pillow and blanket in the house, stoking up a big fire order take out and lay around in jammies, (optional) snuggling hmmm stimulating conversation and watching old movies. Couldn't think of a better way to spend a stormy day. When I was younger, I wanted to do everything, atleast once. I've been cliff diving, skied of cliffs that would scare the crap out of most. Skydiving, bungied from a hot air balloon. Road the rapids in the Grand Canyon. Did a little dirt racing and some competitive waterskiing when I was younger. Just novice, to take it serious and have to train would have taken all the fun out of it. But gotta tell you. All the places I've been and all the things I've done in my life would not have been worth a darn without someone to share it with. And I would trade it all for love. Probably the single most important thing I've learned in my life is that friends and family and the smiles and laughter and the love they bring...those are the true riches in life.

Or laugh at me because I think they're funny. As long as we're laughing that's the important thing. After all normal would just be boring.
